Medical College of Alabama. Office of the Dean.
Physician, medical dean, medical researcher
Dr. Tinsley Randolph Harrison was born near Talladega, Alabama on 18 March 1900. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and his medical education from Johns Hopkins University. He first worked for Vanderbilt University as first chief resident in internal medicine and later as an assistant professor and full professor of internal medicine. Harrison later headed the Departments of Medicine at Bowman Gray and Southwestern Medical School. After resigning from Southwestern, he was persuaded to accept the acting deanship of the Medical College of Alabama, a unit of the University of Alabama that was located in Birmingham. Harrison served as acting dean from the summer of 1950 to the spring of 1951. His time was almost completely taken up with the search for a permanent dean. In addition, he served on a committee to find a full-time chair for the Department of Pediatrics. Harrison made few administrative decisions and essentially served as a caretaker until the permanent dean was hired. He remained chair of the Department of Medicine until 1957 and continued as a faculty member until his retirementin 1970. He died in 1978.
