Roslyn Arlin Mickelson was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on April 3, 1948, but grew up in Los Angeles, California and eventually became a naturalized citizen. Mickelson remained in Los Angeles and earned a PhD at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1984. She has been in Charlotte since 1985, where she teaches sociology, womens studies, and information technology. Among her interests include the political economy of schooling and school reform, particularly the relationships among race, ethnicity, gender, the educational process outcomes, and also the transitioning of students from school to workplace. In 1997, the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system hired Dr. Mickelson as an expert witness in its litigation against William Capacchione; a case in which Capacchione alleged racial descrimination against his daughter, Christina when the Capacchiones tried to enroll her in a predominantly African-American magnet school. The Board of Education won that suit.
