Bryson, James Gordon, 1884-1968
Physician and author James Gordon Bryson (1884-1968) was born to Joseph Goodson and Elizabeth (Anderson) Bryson on October 6, 1884, in Liberty Hill, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas medical school at Galveston in 1910, he married Lily Clara Shuddemagen, and the couple eventually had six children. Bryson established his medical practice in Pearsall, before moving to Bastrop. During his thirty-seven-year career, he became one of the best-known general practitioners in Central Texas and was commended by the State of Texas for his service. Active in local Democratic politics, Bryson served as Bastrop mayor from 1946 to 1950 and as school board president for several terms, beginning in 1923. He was also an active Mason and Methodist. After retiring from medicine 1947, Bryson spent much of his time working on his Bastrop County farm until returning to the University of Texas at the age of 72 to study history. His studies resulted in two books, Reminiscences of a Country Doctor (1963), reissued as One Hundred Dollars and a Horse (1965), and Shin Oak Ridge (1965).
