Ellen Harris is a graduate of the Yale School of Organization and Management and the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. She was a vice president of Emigrant Savings Bank, director of exhibitions at Pratt Institute, assistant to the administrator at The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, consultant to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, editor of art books for Harry N. Abrams, author of articles on contemporary art, and treasurer of the Franklin Furnace Archive. In 1992 she became the director of the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey.
