Bernard Werner was born in Brooklyn and attended local elementary and high schools, He majored in History and Philosophy at Brooklyn College, graduating with a B.A. in 1952, and then attended Columbia University and earned his M.A. in History. Although his heart had always been set on writing, he began as a high school Social Studies teacher, first at the Manual Training High School and then transferring to the Manhattan Performing Arts High School where he taught until his retirement in 1985. As a youngster, Werner wrote an essay that was printed in the school magazine. However, it was another fifty years before he had another article published; the article was Remembering Mr. Eastmond, an homage to his freshman English instructor. It was publsihed in Midstream Magazine in December 2001. Mr. Werner decided to donate his writings to Brooklyn College, where he had recieved "such an enriching experience", and decided that it would be a good idea to donate his materials to the place he knew "they would be treated as a useful resource."
