Vardell, William G. (William Gildersleeve), 1829-1897
Variant namesNative of Charleston, S.C.,; served as a quartermaster for the 23rd South Carolina Infantry Regiment during the War Between the States, obtaining the rank of captain, then major; 1857 married Jane ("Jennie") Dickson Bell (1835-1919); after the war established a draying business, then made unsuccessful attempts at farming near Charleston; in the 1880s became a Presbyterian minister, serving various congregations including churches on Johns Island and James Island, S.C.
