The Publishers Association of the South (PAS) was officially created at a meeting of the founding steering committee on 19 January 1985 in Atlanta, Ga., to advance book publishing in the South. To achieve that purpose, PAS undertakes educational efforts to heighten the professionalism of members and communication efforts--with booksellers, libraries, and the media--to expand awareness of the variety of books published in the South.

PAS represents its members at such trade shows and exhibits as the American Booksellers Association (ABA) convention and the Southeast Booksellers Association (SEBA) convention. PAS services to members include a newsletter; annual meetings and workshops held in conjunction with the Southeast Booksellers Association trade show; liaison with the Southeast Booksellers Association and high profile at SEBA trade show; affiliation with the Association of American Publishers (AAP), including access to AAP educational activities; a central office to facilitate communication within PAS; promotion of best-selling titles through a PAS basic stock list distributed to booksellers; a variety of learning and exhibition opportunities; and listing in the PAS directory of members. PAS also offers a mini-trade show featuring vendors specializing in various aspects of book production, which is held prior to the SEBA convention; and access to PAS's general counsel, King & Ballow, a firm experienced in publishing law.

Membership in PAS is available to book-publishing firms in the South. In addition, associated firm memberships are available to non-publishing corporations related to the business of publishing and supporting the industry; associated individual memberships are available to persons who, through their profession and interest in the business of publishing, ally themselves to the industry.
