Daniel H. Atkins entered Emory & Henry College on 17 August 1871 as a sophomore. While attending Emory & Henry he belonged to the Calliopean Literary Society and was a tutor in ancient languages. Atkins graduated first in his class of twenty three in June 1874, and received the Bachelor of Arts degree. Before attending Emory & Henry, Atkins was in the Grayson County Civil War Reserves (Co. B 4th VA Reserves). Atkins was a minister for 58 years, a president of Weaverville College in North Carolina and editor of the Christian Advocate, a North Carolina state Methodist paper. He died in Asheville in 1928, and is buried in Asheville's Riverside Cemetery.
