At the age of six, Richard Prangley was placed in the Coldwater State Home by his parents in the belief that he was retarded. He was kept in mental institutions until he was 21, at which time he was released to fend for himself. After some initial difficulties, he obtained employment with the Michigan Dept. of Mental Health. While working for the Dept., he developed an interest in the history of mental health care in Michigan, and this collection reflects his efforts to research and promote this subject.
