Coutts, Flora Jane, 1897-1970.
Flora Jane Coutts was born Sept. 25, 1897, in West Charleston, Vt., the oldest daughter of Flora Mable Longeway and Robert M. Coutts. Flora Coutts graduated from Hardwick Academy and received a certificate from Johnson Normal School in 1917. She taught school in Vermont, Cleveland, Ohio, and Korea from 1921 to 1925. Coutts worked for the Vermont Extension service, 1925-1936; ran her own business, 1936-1937; and served as Executive Secretary of the Orleans County Development Association, the Northeastern Vermont Development Association, and the Vermont Association for the Crippled. During World War II she was club director for the American Red Cross and was stationed in India and China from 1943 to 1945. She served in the Vermont Senate, 1937-1940, and the Vermont House, 1961-1972.
