Durning-Lawrence was born in London in 1837 and went on to be educated at University College London. He was an MP for Truro between the years 1895-1906 but his main passion was the study of literature, especially the field of Bacon/ Shakespeare. In 1910 he wrote Bacon is Shakespeare and in 1912 The Shakespeare Myth . He died in 1914. His papers and library were bequeathed by his widow to the University of London in 1929 and transferred in total in 1931.
