Fritz, Kurt von, 1900-1985.
Biographical note: German emigre classicist.
Kurt von Fritz was born in Alsace-Lorraine and taught at the Universities of Munich, Hamburg, and Rostock. He was dismissed from his position at the University of Rostock in 1935 as a conservative who refused to take the required Nazi loyalty oath. He immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1936 and to the United States a year later. He taught at Reed College and Columbia University, 1937-54, then returned to Germany to be a professor of classical philology at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Munich.
