Moses Young accepted an appointment as secretary to South Carolinian Henry Laurens (1724-1792), a U.S. Continental Congressman and foreign minister, in October 1779 for an embassy to Holland. Captured with Henry Laurens, Young was imprisoned in England until his escape in February 1781 after which he made his way to France where he remained until Laurens was released from the Tower of London. Young continued as his secretary until May 1782.

Moses Young served as secretary to Henry Laurens during the American Revolution. Captured with Laurens at sea by the British, Young was imprisoned, escaped and made his way to France. He rejoined the newly-freed Laurens in London in 1782 and petitioned Congress unsuccessfully for his expenses and back salary. He was appointed American Consul to Spain in 1798 by John Adams, and in 1810 again petitioned Congress for expenses arising from that appointment.
