High school and college teacher, Helen Reed Atwood was born in Boise, Idaho, the only child of E.G. and Jessie A. Reed; Helen had a half-brother Stanley and a half-sister Irma. She was raised in Idaho in a family of Christian Scientists, although she left the faith in the 1930s. A graduate of Radcliffe College (A.B. 1930), Atwood taught high school in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Los Angeles, California, before moving to Bakersfield, California, to teach English at Bakersfield Junior College. She was married to David S. Atwood; they had a son David and a daughter Katherine. Atwood died of a heart attack in 1951 in Bakersfield.
