Illinois Association of Women in Education (IAWE) began in 1921 as a part of the National Association of Deans of Women which was founded by Josephine Allin, Mary Ross Potter, Caroline Grote, Julia B. Hensel and Fannie R. Smith in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Former names of the organization include Illinois Association of Deans of Women (IADW), Illinois Association of Women Deans (IAWD) and Illinois Association of Women Deans, Administrators, and Counselors (IAWDAC). Bylaws and constitutions have been revised in 1922, 1936 and 1950. They established committees that by 1936 included Contact, Finance, Findings, Legislation, Local Arrangements, Membership, Nominating, Place, Program, Publicity, Resolutions and Revision of Constitution and Bylaws. In 1961 there were 18 committees.
