Schenk, a native of Germany, was born about 1840. He graduated from the Polytechnicum in Darmstadt. Schenk settled in Newport, Kentucky after emigrating to the United States. He went to work for the Kentucky Geological Survey in the 1870s when Nathaniel Southgate Shaler, a native of Newport, directed the project. Shaler recommended Schenk for his next post, surveyor with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, which Schenk took in 1879. Schenk worked in neighboring states as well as in Kentucky while surveying for the Geodetic Survey.
