Rebecca Swift Gill Field grew up in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. In 1902 she married Wiliam Lusk Webster Field, a teacher of natural science at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts. He later served as headmaster from 1917 to 1942. They had three children: James B., Helen E., and Mary F.
