Dorris was the son of Jonathan Truman Dorris, a professor of history and government at Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. He received his BA from that college, and an MA in political science from the University of Kentucky, then taught school in Alabama before joining the U.S. Navy in 1941. He was first assigned to the VINCENNES and the Atlantic theater. In 1942, the VINCENNES was shifted to the Pacific, and participated in the battle of Midway, after which Dorris was promoted to Lieutenant. The VINCENNES was attacked and sunk by the Japanese on August 9, 1942, as the battle of the Solomon Islands began. Dorris was missing in action and presumed killed.
