Biographical note: Historian and journalist; John Bret Harte is a great-grandson of celebrated western writer Bret Harte and has written books and articles dealing with Arizona and Southwestern history. Bret Harte earned an M.A. degree in history from Yale and in 1972 received a Ph. D. from the University of Arizona in Western American history. His doctoral dissertation was "The San Carlos Indian Reservation, 1872-1886." He has served as a research historian for the Arizona Historical Society in Tucson and edited several historical journals including Journal of the West. Later, he wrote as an editorial writer and columnist for the Tucson Citizen newspaper.
