Biographical note: Irene McCanliss apparently resided for most of her life in Chester, Massachusetts, and New York City. She attended Barnard College in New York, and subsequently served as president of the New York City Barnard Alumnae Association. McCanliss was an independent researcher interested in thoroughbred horse racing. She was employed as an editor for PICTORIAL REVIEW magazine and was the author of numerous racing articles for such publications as the BLOOD HORSE and the THOROUGHBRED RECORD, frequently under the pseudonym Haidee Stuart. Several of the latter were reprinted in McCanliss's book WEIGHT ON THE THOROUGHBRED RACEHORSE (1967). McCanliss's most widely known work is perhaps her scrapbook detailing the career of Triple Crown winner Citation.
