Founded December 19, 1947 by a group of biologists then attending a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago; the first formal meeting of the new society was held in 1949 in conjunction with the AAAS meeting in New York. In 1951 the Journal and Editorial Committees were established and in 1954 The Journal of Protozoology made its debut and in 1993 the journal changed its name to Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology.
