Cresson, Hilborne Thomson.
Variant namesCresson, an archaeologist, was born Hilbourne Jones, but married into the Cresson family of Philadelphia. He worked with the Department of Ethnology at the Smithsonian around the time of these letters. He later committed suicide in 1894.
