From 1920 to 1950, academic life was governed by the Dean and Treasurer, one of six major administrators of the College. In 1950, the roles of Dean and Treasurer were separated, with the Dean retaining control over academic matters. In 1958, the title was changed to Academic Dean, and in 1974, the Academic Dean became the Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1975, the Vice President for Academic Affairs resigned and duties were divided between the Undergraduate Dean, the Dean of the Graduate School, and the Dean of Administration. This division continued until 1981, when the Undergraduate Dean became the Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1994, the position title changed again, from Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty to Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. In 1995, Academic Affairs was reorganized, and its 10 offices combined into five (Office of Graduate, Adult and Continuing Education, Admissions, Office of Student Services, Office of Instructional Resources, Office of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs (Dean of Studies), and the Office of the Registrar). Chief Academic Officers of the College have been Sister Mary Rose Quillinan (1920-1926 and 1932-1936), Sister Mary Gonzaga Wellworth (1926-1932), Sister Rose of Lima Dolan (1936-1949), Sister Helen Patricia Delany (1950-1956), Sister Therese Lynch (1956-1968), Sister Katherine T. McNamee (1968-1975), Donald Tappa (1975-1987), Katerine Hanley (1957-1981), Janet M. Cavanaugh (1975-1981), Andrew Cote (1987-1993), Sister Anne Clark (1993-1994 and 1996-1997), Jack Calareso (1994-1996), and William J. Lowe (1997-2003).
