Founded in Mansfield, Connecticut in 1857, by Joseph Battell Merrow (1819-1897), the Merrow Machine Company started as a stockinet manufacturer. In 1894 the company was incorporated in Hartford and produced sewing machines, specializing in industrial over-edging, overseaming and shell stitching machines. Joseph Millard Merrow (1848-1947) was president from 1894-1947. His brother, George Merrow was treasurer until 1943 when nephew John Merrow Washburn became treasurer and general manager. The company was dissolved in 2004.
