Hugh Harding Chapman, Jr. was born on November 5, 1915 in Evansville, Indiana. He earned his A.B. from DePauw University in 1939 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. In 1946-1947 he was a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University and from 1947-1949 he was an instructor at Rutgers University. He came to Penn State in 1949 to fill the position of part-time Professor in the Romance Language Department. He held offices in three literature sections of the Modern Language Association and was involved in many other literature and language associations such as Pennsylvania Modern Language Association, American Association of Teachers of French and American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. He also held memberships in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Sigma Iota. He retired as Professor Emeritus of romance languages. He died on March 18, 1997 at the age of 81 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
