Wiprud, Theodore, 1891-1978

Theodore Wiprud, the first full-time director of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia, was born of Norwegian parents in 1891. He grew up in Frederic, Wis., and was a successful banker there by the early 1920s. During the Depression, local doctors would ask Wiprud for advice about unpaid bills. As a result, Wiprud became the business manager of a medical clinic in Milwaukee County, Wis. Wiprud spent nine years as executive secretary of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County. He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1938 to head the Medical Society of the District of Columbia, where he remained until his retirement in 1962. In addition to these duties, Wiprud became an accomplished writer. As managing editor for the Medical Annals of the District of Columbia, he published a book and several articles in academic medical journals. Theodore Wiprud died of pneumonia at his home in Chevy Chase, Md., in 1978.

Frederick A. Castle interrupted his studies at the Bellevue Medical College in New York to join the newly-formed Medical Cadet Corps of the U.S. Army Medical Department in 1861. He also served for two years in the Navy before the Civil War ended. He received his M.D. from Bellevue Medical College in 1866. He occupied, for a time, the chair of therapeutics at Bellevue and also worked as a visiting physician at Presbyterian hospital. Castle was an active editor of medical journals throughout his career.
