The University of Wyoming’s first music lessons began in 1895 and were instructed by Mrs. LeRoy Grant, who taught the first two years without pay. The department began offering graduate recitals in 1903 and the University of Wyoming Glee Club and Mandolin Club formed in 1906. It was not until 1909 that the department began offering formal instruction with classes offered in organ, violin and other instruments. A band was formed in 1913 and an orchestra was added in 1914. The department offered both undergraduate and graduate level degrees. Undergraduate degrees included Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, while graduate programs included Master of Music and Performance Certificate in Music degrees.
