Martha R. Jones was born in 1884. Her interest in nutrition was the outgrowth of her childhood illnesses of respiratory problems and severe tooth decay. She was the 1st woman to receive a Ph. D. in physiological chemistry at Yale. She conducted worldwide research on the effects of diet, and supported a diet of balanced acid-ash and alkaline foods. In 1961 she founded the Martha R. Jones Foundation for Health Education in Wilmore, Ky. The Martha R. Jones lectureship at Asbury Theological Seminary is part of this program.
Clytie Sweet was a friend and co-worker of Martha R. Jones. Martha R. Jones designated her to carry on the research.
