James Brydges (1673-1744): British statesman and patron of the arts; MP for Hereford (1698-1714), Clerk of the Hanaper (1714); Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire and Radnor (1721-1742). During the War of Spanish Succession he served as Paymaster General for the Forces Abroad. The dukedom and the post of the clerk of Hanaper was inherited by his son, Henry Brydges, 2nd Duke of Chandos. The 3rd Duke of Chandos, James Brydges (1732-1789), was a prominent Whig politician and courtier. In 1777 he married Anne Eliza (Gamon) Elletson, the daughter of Richard Gamon and widow of Roger Hope Elletson, Governor of Jamaica (1766-1767) and owner of the Hope and Middleton plantations there.
