Captain Earl J. Hathaway was born May 14, 1894, in Birmingham, Michigan. He served in the Mexican Border War (1917) and in World War I (1918). These experiences gave him a love of horses and a love of military order. He joined the Michigan State Police on August 4, 1921. He moved quickly through the ranks and was promoted to captain on June 15, 1934. He was awarded many citations for meritorious service, and is most noted for developing a road blockade procedure based on the river systems of the state. Hathaway retired on January 10, 1958, after 36 years of service. He died on August 25, 1985.
