August 19, 1935, in Hungary's capital city, Budapest, Victor Gtozo Ambrus was born to Gtozo and Iren Ambrus. He began his early education in Hungary and for three years was enrolled in the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. Migrating west, Ambrus then studied at the Royal College of Art in London where he received his diploma and ARCA in 1959, just one year after his marriage to another illustrator, Glenys R. Chapman. Ambrus spent his professional career as an artist and designer, author and illustrator of children's books, receiving a Kate Greenaway Gold Medal of Library Association of Great Britain in 1964 for Three Poor Tailors
