The eldest son of William and Elizabeth Mann Sanday, William Sanday was born August 1, 1843 at Holme Pierrepont, Nottinghamshire. A theological scholar, Rev. Sanday was dedicated to the scientific study of the New Testament, especially the gospels. From 1895 to 1919 he was Lady Margaret professor of divinity and canon of Christ Church, Oxford. Sanday died at Oxford on September 16, 1920.
