Teacher and child welfare worker. Doris Bender Hughes graduated from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) in 1947 with a B.A. in psychology and an M.A. in the same field in 1950. In the interim she taught at the Child Welfare Station and the university's Preschool. From 1950 to 1954 Hughes taught kindergarten in Coralville, Iowa, and then left her job to raise a family with her husband, Richard Hughes. She subsequently taught in Iowa City schools, worked in North Hall at the Early Childhood Center, and served as an academic advisor at the University of Iowa.
