Laura Maria Caterina Bassi was an Italian scientist, the first woman to officially teach at a university in Europe. Born in Bologna, at the age of 21 she was appointed professor of anatomy at the University of Bologna and was elected to the Academy of the Institute for Sciences in 1732 (the year this medal was minted in her honor).

Antonio Lazari was a native of Modena and was mint engraver at Bologna, 1709-1734.
