Dowell moved to Portland, Oregon in 1850, and then to Jackson in 1852, finally moving back to Portland in 1855. He took part in the Rogue River Indian War in 1853 and the Yakima War in 1855. He operated a pack train from Wilamette Valley to the gold mines and bought and edited the Oregon Sentinel.

Benjamin F. Dowell, Oregon attorney and newspaperman, was born in Virginia and graduated in law from the Univ. of Virginia in 1847. He emigrated to California from Missouri in 1850, then to Oregon where he participated in the Indian wars as a member of the 1st Regiment, Oregon Volunteers. He settled in Jacksonville, OR, became proprietor of the Oregon Sentinel, and was influential in local politics.
