Preble, Charles E.

Hide Profile

The information in this collection is about the descendents of Abraham Preble, who emigrated from Kent County, England, in 1536. He settled in Scituate, Mass. They gathered for a reunion in June 1918 at Youngs Hotel in Boston. Rev. Edgar W. Preble was the driving force behind the reunion. The Prebles formed an association with officers. The coat of arms was shown at this reunion. This dated from the knighting of George Preble of Kent by Queen Elizabeth I in 1585. It was noted that many Prebles had been active in military service. There are many notable Prebles, including George Henry Preble (1816-1885), who wrote a book about the family. His uncle was Edward Preble (1761-1807), after whom Preble Street in Portland, Me., is named.
