The study of geology at the University of Minnesota was introduced in 1872 by way of the Legislative directive establishing the Minnesota Geological and Natural History Survey. Implemented by the Regents' of the University of Minnesota, the survey was instituted to study the geology of Minnesota. Dr. Newton H. Winchell was appointed as state geologist and professor of geology and mineralogy at the University. The department of geology and mineralogy was established in 1874. In 1879, a second professor of geology, Christopher W. Hall, joined the department. Courses offered by the department included geology, mineralogy, geography, petrography and paleontology. In 1962, the School of Earth Science was established within the Institute of Technology, and the name of the department was changed to geology and geophysics. The department is currently one of four components of the Newton Horace Winchell School of Earth Science.
