Sharon Gagnon moved to Anchorage in 1970, teaching French at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) as an adjunct faculty member until 1991. Gagnon has been active as a board or committee member for several Alaskan educational, cultural, scientific, and business organizations including the following: UAA Citizens Advisory Council (1976-1980), Anchorage Volunteer Service League (1980s), Anchorage Chamber of Commerce (1981-1983, 1991-1992), Alaska Repertory Theatre (1984-1988), Anchorage Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics (1987-1993), Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation (1991-1998), the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Public Advisory Group (1994-1996), and the Alyeska Pipeline President's Advisory Panel (1999-2001). She was also a member of the University of Alaska Board of Regents (1991-1998), serving for a term as its president. In 1985, Gagnon was honored for her service to UAA, when a lane leading to campus student housing was named after her.
