Dr. Grace Eldering was born on Sept. 5, 1900 in Hysham, Montana. She received a B.A. in biology/chemistry from the University of Montana (1927) and a doctorate in immunology from John Hopkins University (1941). Eldering began working as a microbiologist for the Michigan Dept. of Public Health in 1928. In 1932, Eldering, along with Dr. Pearl L. Kendrick ran a diagnostic laboratory that served 28 counties in western Michigan. As part of their work, they produced a field study for whooping cough and developed a successful vaccine for it. Dr. Eldering retired from state employment in 1969. She was a member of the Audubon Society, and was very interested in the work of the United Nations. It also appears she was active in her church, and that towards the end of her career, she became interested in environmental issues. She died in 1988.
