The Central Labor Union of Lewiston and Auburn, Maine, was organized in 1890 and affiliated with the American Federation of Labor. It was composed of delegates from various trade unions of carmen, painters, carpenters, masons, textile workers, papermakers, stone-cutters, sheet-metal workers, street-railway employees, musicians and stagehands. Central labor unions were formed to provide support for their member groups, investigate grievances among unions, and investigate disputes between unions and employers. They had no authority to instigate strikes.
