Variant namesAdrien Stoutenburg was a librarian in Richfield, Minnesota, and a reporter for the Richfield News before she became an editor for Parnassus Press. Most of her books have been for juveniles, and she has contributed a substantial body of poetry. Among the awards and honors received are the Edwin Markham Award, the Michael Sloane fellowship from the Poetry Society of America (both 1961), the Borestone Mountain award, the Lamont Poetry Award of the Academy of American Poets (1964), the Commonwealth Club of California Silver Medal (1969) for best book of poetry by a Californian.

Adrien Stoutenberg was born December 1, 1916, in Darfur, Minnesota. She attended the Minneapolis School of Arts. She worked as a librarian and political reporter and editor while also doing free-lance writing. She has also written a great deal of poetry. She has used the pseudonyms Lace Kendall and Nelson Minier.
