Mary McIntyre McMurray was born in Ayr, Ayrshire on 23 May 1909. Her father, Robert McMurray, had been a GPO overseer, but died prior to her attending University. Mary attended the University of Glasgow from 1926-1929 , taking classes in Italian (Ordinary) and French (Ordinary) in her first year; Political Economy (Ordinary), English (Ordinary), French (Ordinary) and Geology (Ordinary) in her second, and French (Higher Ordinary), English (Higher Ordinary) and Moral Philosophy (Ordinary) in her third and final year. She graduated with an MA in June 1929 and subsequently worked as a teacher in Ayr until 1936. She married William Sidney Lanham in December 1931 and died in Ayr on 26 December 1976.
