Otto Pankok was born in Mülheim in 1893. He studied art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere, Paris. He was forbidden by the Nazis to work as an artist after 1941. In spite of this he worked in secret to record his memories of Jews, Gypsies and others who suffered in the Nazi camps.
