Born in Bavaria (Germany) in 1833, Martin Muench immigrated to Texas in 1853. The following year he arrived in San Antonio, where he married Prussian Margareta Gimbel (1836-1924) in 1858 March. The couple had eight children: Ferdinand E. (1859-1909), Martin J. (born circa 1860), Charles H. (1865-1915), Joseph E. (born circa 1866), Louis V. (1867-1924), Anna K. (1868-1940), Barbara Pauline (1872-1961), and Kate (1874-1964). Muench became a prominent merchant in San Antonio and served as a city alderman. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1869 and died in San Antonio between 1880 and 1887.
