William Munroe was born in 1779 and married Achsah Sawyer in 1798. They were the parents of Josiah (who married Jane Sawin born in 1813), Achsah (who married Deacon Edward Carlton), Merrick, Daniel, and 10 other children. He and his family came to Waterford from Harvard, Massachusetts in 1802. He built a tannery with his partner Josiah Atherton. William was succeeded by his son Josiah, then another son, Merrick. In 1848 Josiah Munroe built a plaster mill in Waterford. Both William and Josiah held public office in Waterford for many years. Both Josiah and Merrick served a term in the Maine Legislature.
