Gabriel Gauthier (b. Sept. 12, 1916, Lyon, France), French Air Force officer, graduated from the Air Force Academy in Versailles in 1938 and was assigned to fighter group GCII/7. He served in combat from the first day of World War II, was seriously wounded but rejoined his team in North Africa in June 1940. In 1944 he was again shot down and wounded while serving as commandant of the 4th Escadrille, but managed to rejoin his group and take command in February 1945. After the War, in the early 1960s, General Gauthier became the personal high command chief for General De Gaulle, then President of the Republic, and reached the highest post a few years later: chief of high command of the French Air Force. He left active service in December 1972.
