The Wisconsin Women's Council was created by 1983 Wisconsin Act 27 and has operated since 1983 attached to the Dept. of Administration (WIHV85-A694). It was preceded in mission by a non-statutory commission, the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women (WIHV89-A232), 1964-1979, and by an advisor in Governor Dreyfus' office, 1979-1983. The council has 15 members, including the governor or governor designee, two members of the senate and two of the assembly, six public members appointed by the governor, two public members appointed by the president of the senate, and two public members appointed by the speaker of the assembly.
The council, governed by s. 16.01, 1995-96 Wis. Stats., is charged with identifying barriers that prevent women in Wisconsin from participating fully and equally in all aspects of life. The council conducts statewide hearings on issues that concern women and advises all state agencies about the impact upon women of current and emerging state policies, laws, and administrative rules. It is required to work closely with state agencies, the private sector and groups concerned with women's issues and to disseminate information on the status of women in this state.
