Organized in 1884 as the College Women's Club of Washington, the local branch of the then Association of Collegiate Alumnae; the national organization absorbed the Southern Association of College Women in 1921 and changed its name to the American Association of University Women; the branch broke with the national organization over the issue of admitting African Americans and withdrew to form the University Women's Club; those who did not agree with the branch's position withdrew and were subsequently recognized by the national organization as the Washington Branch; the University Women's Club later rejoined the national organization.
