Dr. Thomas Samuel Leary, born on May 8, 1915, in Rochester, New York, was a resident of Lake Charles, Louisiana, since November 1955. Dr. Leary was married to Mrs. Geraldine Leary and had two daughters, Patricia and Kathleen. He died in Lake Charles on September 9, 1984.

His educational achievements included Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and Master of Science degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, New York. He received his doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University. Dr. Leary was selected Head of the Engineering Department at McNeese State University in 1961. In October 1969, he was elected President of McNeese State University. He remained as President until his retirement in July 1980.

He was president of the Conference of Louisiana Colleges and Universities in 1979. He served on the board of directors of St. Patrick Hospital and the Pioneer Club. He was also the national chairman for the American Institute for Chemical Engineers in 1958 and 1964.
