Robert Hamilton, son of John Hamilton, was born in East Lothian, Scotland, about 1749. In 1778 he came to Montreal as an employee of the Ellices; in 1779 was on Carleton Island; the next, year removed to Niagara, and later founded Queenston, Ont. He was a man of much ability and one of the leading characters of Upper Canada. His fortune was estimated at £200,000. He was a member of the Land Board of Upper Canada in 1791, and of the first Executive Council. He was the first judge of the District of Nassau. In 1785 he married Catherine (Askin) Robertson, who died in 1796; then married Mary (Herkimer) McLean. He died Mar. 23,1809. (from Burton Hist. Rec., I, 188) (blue index cards)
